It’s All Connected: What Two Months of Analytics Taught Me

by Taylor Van Winkle, Digital Marketing Intern | Nov 4, 2026

Hi, I’m Taylor. This summer I was OpGo’s first digital marketing intern. For two months, I got to work behind the numbers.

Let me tell you about what stuck with me:

You open a monthly report. The numbers look clean and organized. You trust them, or you don’t, but either way, you never see what happened before they reached you. I felt that same way at the start of my internship. Two months later, I’ve been the one doing that upstream work, and I want to show you what I’ve learned.

Taylor Its All Connected What Two Months of Analytics Taught Me

What I Expected vs What It Was

Before starting my internship, I had my own idea of what digital marketing was and what the data showed. I thought the dashboard built itself. Plug in the data, get back rows of green or red flags, good or bad, done.

What I didn’t understand was the amount of human judgment that sits underneath: someone decides what to measure, how to measure it, checks that it’s right, and catches when it lies.

Not only that, but I had no idea separate tools were measuring separate things or why it mattered which one a number came from.

It's All Connected

What made things really click for me was thinking about digital work as a network, everything wired together. Each slice of work is hard to make sense of on its own. If you don’t know what the chart or table is telling you, the dashboard is meaningless. Once you see how it all connects, it finally makes sense.

Let me break it down for you.

We start with the client’s goals and follow the threads down: goals shape the reporting, reporting draws from the data sources, and those depend on the tracking underneath.

That is the planning.

Now, troubleshooting runs the other way, and this is where I’ve spent most of my time.

When the numbers don't quite add up, the report is usually not the actual problem. The report is often just where you notice it. The real issue lies further down, where the tracking is quietly miscounting certain interactions.

So, what do we do?

A lot of my work this summer went into building a quality control dashboard. It watches numbers across every platform: Google Analytics, Search Console, and Google Ads, and flags them the moment something looks off. The word “off” goes both ways. It isn’t only for numbers that drop. This quality control system takes it a step further by flagging numbers that look “too” good.

Conversions spike; everything seems great. But before we move on, the system quietly says: verify before you celebrate. A big jump can be real, or it can be a tracking hiccup counting the same thing twice.

The value is in checking before anyone gets excited, instead of telling a client their leads doubled and having them wonder why the phone isn’t ringing.

This system also knows the difference between a scary number and a scary-looking one. A drop from 100 conversions to 20 is scary and requires action. However, a drop from 5 to 1, which is the same percentage drop, is scary to look at but not necessarily a problem.

Working with my mentor Drue (OpGo digital/data expert), to teach the system to tell those apart, alerting when it matters and knowing when to stay quiet, was where a lot of my time went.

What I think is cool about the quality control system is it doesn’t tell you exactly what broke. It tells you where to start looking, and from there you follow the thread down to the cause. This is what helped me gain an understanding of the whole process.

Three decisions that come up in client reporting

Each of these has two reasonable answers, and choosing one means giving something up. Pick the option you would go with and read what follows from it.

I’m Still No Expert

I have learned a lot. Yet, I’m still just scratching the surface.

What I can tell you is that what you may look at once a month, I’m looking at every day, and what I’ve found is that once you see the whole network, once you see how it all connects, you finally understand the power of digital marketing.
